Everything You Need To Know About Banff, AB

One of the best parts of living in Alberta is being in such close range to Banff! I’ve gone on wholesome family trips, and fun girlfriend road trips to Banff – it’s a wonderful place to escape to the mountains. And this post is going to tell you everything you need to know about Banff, AB!

It took me years to go back to Banff, because Jasper is always advertised as quieter and better – but I am so in love with how much there is to do in Banff if you are not a skier.

There is shopping (though I am sure the prices are jacked up), there are mainstream restaurants and local restaurants, mainstream hotels and boutique hotels, and much more!

I’ve shared what Banff hotel is the one you DO NOT want to stay at – but there is hope, there are some amazing hotels with gorgeous rooms to stay in. The Banff Centre is close to Tunnel Mountain Trailhead, it’s across the river opposite the Fairmont Banff Springs, and it’s the best quiet location with access to town.

Here are some tips for visiting Banff:

  1. Even if you are not staying at the Fairmont Banff Springs (it’s gorgeous but expensive), you can visit their terrace that overlooks the river and a beautiful mountain landscape. Taking the time for afternoon tea at the Fairmont is a wonderful experience! Make sure you book it in advance, I don’t believe they take walk ins.
  2. Find the best restaurants off of Banff Avenue (the main street), from delicious Mexican food to Canadiana to amazing fresh burgers! Check the local map to find the best restaurants in Banff.
  3. Bringing kids to Banff? Make sure you pick a hotel with an incredible pool! It’s probably a given to find a hotel with a pool when you’re travelling to Banff with young kids, but Banff activities are usually adult oriented (like hikes, breweries, spas, skiing, etc). The Banff Centre has a kid pool, lane swimming, and hot tub – something for everyone!
  4. If you are not a hiking person, Banff has incredible walking trails along the river. You feel like you’re in the wilderness but are not far from the town!
  5. Indulge in the touristy excursions! Taking a walk down Banff Avenue will show you the iconic sweet shops and Canada enthused gift shops. If you have not tried a beaver tail, stop by BeaverTails – you will not be disappointed!
