Marc Anthony sent me these Grow Long hair styling products in a press package, I love the hot pink packaging! I’ll take you through my easy half top knot tutorial in a moment – if you have trouble growing your hair, you need to try the Marc Anthony Dry 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner spray!

This dry shampoo is sulphate-free, paraben-free, alcohol-free and phthalates-free! Although, you know I have to mention it… it is not fragrance free. Hopefully one day one of my favourite brands will release a dry shampoo that has no fragrance! That would be the best.

The essential ingredients in the Marc Anthony Grow Long 2-in-1 Dry Shampoo and Conditioner are caffeine, ginseng, and rice starch. The formula helps fit excess oils and dryness, while give volume and lift to your hair.

So, after learning more about the dry shampoo here are my tricks to a easy, quick half top knot:
  1. The dirtier the better! I know it can feel gross to go multiple days without washing your hair, but that extra grit from not washing combined with dry shampoo will give your hair the lift you want for that perfect half top knot look.
  2. Use as many elastics as you need! Sometimes the only thing that can keep your half top knot looking perky (instead of sad) is 3 or 4 elastics.
  3. Pull out the tightness of your bun! Just like with braids, to make them look fuller you can tease or pull them out a bit, you can pull out your bun to make it more voluminous and messy.
  4. There is no perfect length of hair for top knots! If you have short hair, long hair, medium hair, thin hair, thick hair, permed hair, etc – you can do a top knot! Don’t be afraid because you think you don’t have enough hair (girl, use all the bobby pins you need!) or you have too much hair. It takes a bit of practice, but I personally think everyone can pull off a half top knot and look amazing doing it.
If you’re wondering what steps I do to create this easy, quick top knot hair tutorial in the photos above, it’s so simple:
  1. Brush out your hair and generously apply the Marc Anthony Dry 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner spray.
  2. If you want extra hold and volume throughout the day, massage a quarter sized amount of the Marc Anthony 10-in-1 Everything Foam into your roots and downward.
  3. Section the amount of hair you want for your half top knot and secure it with an elastic. Make sure the elastic is tight.
  4. Curl your hair – I used the Nume 25mm Curling Wand.
  5. Twist the mini pony tail you created for your half top knot, and wrap it around the base of your mini pony tail, then secure the mini bun with another elastic.
  6. Add another elastic if you need, or tease the bun if you need more volume to it. Secure it further with these amazing bobby pins or the traditional bobby pins, whichever works best for you.
  7. Lightly spray with hairspray at your curls and half top knot. Voila!

I hope my easy and quick half top knot hair tutorial helped answer any questions you have about this hairstyle! It really is simple for even beginners to try – and like I said before, I think everyone can pull it off!

Top 3 Beaches Close To Edmonton That Are Family Friendly!

When living in Alberta, you know that the winters are going to be tough but at least you can look forward to the short 2 months of summer-like weather! Well, that was not the case this year… like I said in my latest Instagram post, it felt like July and August this year were a combination of rainy Spring or cool Fall weather! This year’s weather was not ideal for a day trip to the beach but it doesn’t hurt to know where the best spots are! So, check out below for the top 3 beaches close to Edmonton, AB!

I was born and partially raised in British Columbia, so my lake standards are pretty high. I can safely say Alberta Beach does not impress me, but thankfully that’s not one of the top beaches close to Edmonton, AB!

Here are my favourite (and clean) beaches close to Edmonton:

Sylvan Lake

Every year Matt and I take our family to Sylvan Lake for family camp. But this year Thaddeus’ due date was too close to the dates we would be away in Sylvan Lake, AB so Matt’s mom took the girls for the week while we were at home in St. Albert waiting for baby boy to arrive.

Sylvan Lake, the town and actual lake, are one of our favourites! I would drive the whole way there just to visit the Big Moo Ice Cream store. The beach is long and there is plenty of (paid) parking.

But like I said, Thaddeus was to be born too close to our annual Sylvan Lake trip so instead I took our big family (without Matt, he was at work) to…

Gull Lake

Gull Lake is great for kids because similarly to Sylvan Lake it can be quite shallow (depending on when you visit) and that is awesome for children that cannot swim yet or are beginners.

There are a few campgrounds around the southern end of Gull Lake, which is right across the Queen Elizabeth 2 Highway from Lacombe, AB. I saw that the Brewers Campground (I believe it is also called Aspen Beach Provincial Park) had a super fun in ground trampoline this year – the same ones you see at the Edmonton Corn Maze – the perfect way to let your kids burn off their energy on cold or hot days.

Another campsite is the Lakeview Campground, adjacent to Brewers Campground.

Insider’s tip: if you’re able to get a spot in the “B” section of the Lakeview Campground, you’ll be closest to the beach. But if you’re closer to the main road in the “B” section, you are closest to the only showers in the campsite. Just a few things I learned while visiting!

Pigeon Lake

The closest out of all 3 beaches close to Edmonton – Ma-Me-O Beach at Pigeon Lake is great for families with young kids! And it is only an hour out of Edmonton, which is doable for parents with toddlers that do not fair well in the car.

You can spend all day outside at the beach or at the park! Ma-Me-O Beach, Alberta offers park programs every morning from 10am-12pm all week long during the summer.

They also have sailing camps and swimming lessons – information available in their Ma-Me-O Beach Days Newsletter each year!

Backyard Makeover On A Budget: What To Save On And Splurge On!

I love summer! This year I set the goal to decorate and transform our deck into the family-friendly backyard. And as always, I wanted to makeover the backyard on a budget because Matt has trained me to not ever want to pay an arm and a leg for decor (and everything needed to be kid/toddler friendly, from plates to tables to gardening).

Last year we moved into this house in May and other rooms in the house took priority over decorating the backyard. Not only that but it was difficult to imagine a space last year when Adeline was 9 months old and crawling, those stairs off the deck made me so nervous, but now she is 18 months old and a pro at being safe around the stairs which opens a world of possibilities for decorating the year!

Let’s talk about what to splurge on and what to save on when decorating your family-friendly backyard:

SAVINGS | Patio furniture! If you live in Canada, like my family, we have severely short summers! We maximum have 3 months of summer-like weather, and even then we can have some crazy cold rainy weeks, so why spend your whole backyard makeover budget on furniture that will barely be used throughout the summer? Try Kijiji (only available for Canadians) or go garage sale-ing! I got this patio table and chairs for $75 on Kijiji – that’s a testament that you can accomplish your budget-friendly, chic patio!

If you’re still not able to find anything that is cheap, subscribe to your local home improvement store’s email list to know exactly when their biggest sales are – Matt is always looking at and comparing prices from Canadian Tire.

SAVINGS | Decor and lighting! The cups, the centrepiece plants, the outdoor rug (bought 50% off), the throw pillows, the string lights – all bought on clearance throughout the year. Sometimes you need to wait for those big sales in the middle of winter or spring to build up your outdoor decor stash! The best sales for summer items are off season, just like the best time to buy Christmas ornaments are on clearance during the spring and summer.

Keep a physical vision board or a Pinterest backyard inspiration board to help you keep focus throughout the year so you can makeover your backyard on a budget!

SPLURGE | Reuseable plates! I know paper plates are every moms dream because there is no dish washing afters – but the environment guys, we all have to do our part. Especially because if we’re being honest, we never recycle those paper plates they go straight into the garbage… been there, I’ve done it myself!

Plus, it’s a little bit of a splurge to buy more than you need – if you imagine you have a BBQ with your friends or family, how many plates will you need? That’s kind of where the splurge part comes in! If you are truly going to go all in with the reuseable plates, then buying a 12 piece plate set is going to be more expensive than just 6 for your own family to use day-to-day.

SPLURGE | Custom sensory table! The main attraction of our kid-friendly deck is this amazing sensory table from Farmer’s Daughter Workshop in Edmonton, AB! If you are losing your mind because your kids cannot entertain themselves you need this table. I love this sensory table so much because it’s versatile in how you use it – this large bin sensory table comes with two planks that cover the top and make it into a kid-size picnic table. I highly recommend the large bin sensory table because it accommodates kids from 2-9 years old – the best bang for your buck!

Soon, I’ll be sharing a list of the ultimate outdoor games you can do with this sensory table – because we all need some inspiration for summer activities for toddlers when we’re in the thick of motherhood!

SAVINGS | Kid-friendly gardening! It goes without saying toddlers can be a little rough with delicate things, so Matt has taken it upon himself to teach the girls to plant mini vegetable gardens. They used these thrifted white railing planters to plant seeds from our local gardening centre. The girls get to pick 2-3 vegetables and they learn how to plant them, water them, and watch them grow! It’s educational and cheap if you buy seeds instead of already grown plants!

Trust me, I know how tempting it is to buy the mature plants, if it was my job to do the gardening that’s what I would do… thankfully Matt is much more patient!

I hope you can find some sort of motivation or inspiration for decorating your backyard on a budget – it can be done! I know you can do it!

Here is a list of the places everything I used for my kid-friendly backyard makeover:

patio table: Kijij | sensory table: Farmer’s Daughter Workshop | outdoor rug: Bed Bath & Beyond | seat cushions: Walmart | tropical throw pillows: Wayfair (similar ones here)| reuseable plates: Wayfair (here are a few modern melamine plate sets I love, here and here) | clear cups: Bed Bath & Beyond | cutlery holder/planter: Walmart | cutlery: Structube | centre piece plants: Canadian Superstore |watermelon food cover: Home Sense (super cute one from Etsy, here) | blue bunting banner: Walmart | white planters: Canadian Tire | white string lights: Home Hardware

Food Guide To Central & Downtown Edmonton

Where are you going to eat tonight in Edmonton? If you’re looking for your next supper out, date night, or girl’s night – check out my list of Edmonton restaurants in this food guide to Central and Downtown Edmonton!

Good food brings us together – family, friends, and strangers! Here in YEG we have plenty of great Edmonton restaurants downtown!

I love that Edmonton is the smallest world ever and it doesn’t really hit you until you start talking to someone in line or beside you and realize you know someone in common. And yes, people in Edmonton really do just chat up strangers while waiting in line!

Hannah, from the popular Edmonton lifestyle blog Honey & Betts, is sharing her food guide to YEG! From sweet to savoury, check out your next date night restaurant.

I am on a mission to serve you a food map of Edmonton. Whether you are interested in chai lattes, chicken and bacon waffles, macarons, or pizzas – there is something for everyone!

Here is your Central & Downtown Edmonton Food Guide:
  1. Central Social Hall | 10909 Jasper Avenue | One of my favourite brunch spots because they always have room with their eating area and gorgeous patio! My favourites are the Beautiful Salad, The Cure, and their Chicken & Waffles. I also love that Central opened another location in the heart of St. Albert, so I never have to be without it!
  2. Glow Juicery | 7911 104 Street | A classic juicery that is always collaborating and creating new healthy foods! Glow is a Canada wide business that has a handful of locations in Edmonton. I personally love the Blue Majik Lemonade.
  3. The Common | 9910 109 Street | Chicken & Waffles. That is all I have to say. But there is so much more to The Common than it’s food – the whole place is a mood. The decor, the DJ set, the bar, the patio. And I’ve heard it’s a great place to dance and enjoy music on the weekend!
  4. Pip | 10403 83 Avenue | If you’re looking for a great brunch spot off of Whyte Avenue, you need to try Pip! While I’ve only had their delicious brunch – I know it’s highly millennial of me to rave about their avocado toast, but it’s just so good – I’ve heard their dinner menu is just as amazing!
  5. DOSC | 10190 104 Street | DOSC screams glam when you walk into it – not gaudy, over-the-top glam but old money glam. They have two sections in the same open area, the Drunken Ox restaurant and Sober Cat cafe (get it? DOSC?). The dinner menu is divine, I highly recommend the brussel sprouts and gnocchi. I can speak highly for the lattes in the cafe too, except for their chai lattes. They are not up to my standard for living in Edmonton where chai lattes are taken seriously.
  6. Cacao 70 | 10430 82 Avenue | If you are in the mood for something sweet, you need to run over to Cacao 70! Originally Cacao 70 opened up a little pop up vendor in Kingsway Mall’s Community area that served their decadent specialty chocolate dipped cones before the expanded into their 3 locations in Edmonton (Whyte Avenue, Ice District, West Edmonton Mall). There are multiple concepts to the restaurant – Sweet House (extravagant waffles, sundaes, and specialty ice cream cones), Dip Shop (specialty ice cream cones), and Eatery (bistro menu, and all the sweets).
  7. The Holy Roller | 8222 Gateway Blvd | A blogger’s/photographer’s dream to photograph – I cannot even describe the interior, it’s so many design themes in one! I’m a huge fan of charcuterie and the one I had at The Holy Roller was awesome!
  8. Juniper Cafe & Bistro | 9415 87 Street | I had the privilege of testing out this hidden Edmonton gem during a tour of local Edmonton restaurants for the YEG Home Show – and their desserts are to die for. It’s not a delicate piece of cake or pie, it’s a hardy serving of the best freshly made desserts! I highly recommend trying the angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries if it’s available!
  9. Love Pizza | 10196 109 Street | Another favourite of mine because , just like Central Social Hall, they also opened another location in St. Albert so even though I’ve moved out to the burbs I never have to go without Love Pizza! If you live in Edmonton and haven’t had the chance to support the Love Pizza team, and enjoy their delicious menu or make your own pizza – it’s a must!
  10. Blue Plate Diner | 10145 104 Street | Sometimes you don’t want crazy meals, you need a home cooked meal that you didn’t cook yourself – you know what I mean? That’s when you head to the Blue Plate Diner! They make the best breakfast and dinners that make you feel cozy and good inside. Plus it’s the perfect location if you’re looking for brunch or lunch on a Saturday during the Downtown Edmonton Farmer’s Market.
  11. Sorrentino’s Cafe & Bistro | 10665 109 Street | Sorrentino’s also wears many hats – from catering, to cooking classes, to fine dining, to cafes and bistros! I have nothing poor to say about them, they have delicious Italian food and great service!
  12. Remedy Cafe | 8631 109 Street | Anyone else remember the original Remedy? The narrow and deep location beside the video store? Can we have a round of applause for how much Remedy has grown from then to now! Remedy Cafe has the ultimate chai lattes – this is the standard, for some it’s too sweet but it’s about the depth and richness of the actual flavours. That’s how a chai latte should be! You can find 6 locations around the Edmonton area – all locations are the perfect spots to have chai dates, study, relax, people watch. It is always so busy and I love that this restaurant that is so close to my heart is thriving!
I know there are so many more restaurants I haven’t touched on but keep your eyes peeled as I begin a second list of the best restaurants in Edmonton!

How To Start A Blog | How To Choose A Blog Name | The Story Behind The Edmonton Lifestyle Blog Honey & Betts

Whenever I meet other bloggers or people who read my Edmonton lifestyle blog, Honey & Betts, I’m frequently asked “what is the reason behind the name Honey & Betts?” – and it comes back to how and why I started my blog 4 years ago. If you’re considering starting a blog, figuring out how to choose a blog name is a very important, strategic and personal decision!

Hannah, from the popular Edmonton lifestyle blog Honey & Betts, shares how to choose a blog name you won't regret when starting a blog in 2019. And the meaning of her blog Honey & Betts' name!

So, when I started my original blog (it was named something else that Honey & Betts, but I can’t remember the exact name) I did a lot of research of what goes into blogging and starting a professional, successful blog before my sister and I decided upon Honey & Betts.

Although some blogs are in a specific niche – like gluten-free food blogger or drugstore beauty blogger – I love to write and photograph a lot of different things (skincare, makeup, food, local businesses, fashion, motherhood, travel, baby product reviews, and a lot more) so I didn’t want to make my blog’s name back me into a super specific niche.

Because if a super specific niche blogger writes something outside their niche Google/Pinterest doesn’t really like it. It’s hard for them to be successful outside that niche.

Which is another obstacle for lifestyle bloggers like myself – it’s harder to get domain authority and be successful on your site because your content is all over the place. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it!

Anyways, back to how to choose your blog name and how I chose Honey & Betts!

My sister and I really liked Stella & Dot at the time, and how they used their grandma’s names “Stella” and “Dot”. But after trying that structure with our own grandma’s names, it didn’t roll off the tongue the way we wanted it to. So, we tried my husband’s grandma’s name – Betty – with “honey” because my sister was constantly calling people “honey”. But Honey & Betty didn’t roll off the tongue either! That’s when it morphed into Honey & Betts.

Why did I settle on Honey & Betts? Because it didn’t narrow me down into a super specific niche, when you read the words Honey & Betts blog for the first time you have no idea what niche I am in, and that’s the way I want it. I had to work for years to build into my brand, dive into my blogging and local community, and create content that my readers could trust and be interested in.

And that’s how it all began and here’s where I am now!

If you have any questions on how to choose a blog name you won’t regret, feel free to ask below in the comments!

What Hotel To Stay At In Halifax, Nova Scotia? An Inside Look At The Westin Nova Scotian!

This What Hotel To Stay At In Halifax post is sponsored by Discover Halifax. All opinions are 100% my own.

What hotel to stay at in Halifax, Nova Scotia? When I was searching for the best hotel for our visit to Halifax, I had a few criteria that I wanted for our hotel. It needed to be close to downtown Halifax, it needed to be close to the water or have a waterfront view, and it needed to be modern and comfy.

So at the end of October and beginning of November, my mom and I travelled to Halifax, Nova Scotia to visit my sister who is studying there. It was the first time my mom and I had ever taken a trip by ourselves together, and the first time I was going to be away from my little girls for more than a couple days. For a couple nights in Halifax we stayed at the Westin Nova Scotian, and I can say it checked off all my requirements. It was magical!

We had a great sleep, and then woke up to go workout in the well equipped fitness centre. It had TRX equipment, treadmills, ellipticals, and weights. My favourite part was the fridge full of cold towels to cool down from your workout! I did the 400 challenge from AthleanX that morning and it was a huge comfort to have a cool towel afterwards.

We ended up ordering in breakfast because we had a full day planned. We both had the Eggs Nova with coffee and a smoothie – it was delicious! Though my mom has been to the restaurant located in the Nova Scotian (Elements by Hollis) and it is a great recommendation for dinner.

The location of the Nova Scotian is perfect for anyone looking to explore downtown Halifax or the boardwalk or take the ferry across to Dartmouth. The farmers market is located right behind the hotel on the boardwalk, I wish we had had more time to explore it while there.

5 Car Rental Tips For Traveling To Halifax

Hannah, from the popular Canadian lifestyle blog Honey & Betts, shares her 5 car rental tips for traveling to Halfiax, Nova Scotia. Check out her travel tips!

I’m so excited for this next week where my mom and I will be flying to Halifax, Nova Scotia to visit my sister. It’s been 3 years since she moved there for school and I haven’t been able to go see her, though she’s been able to come back to visit us in Edmonton. First thing we did was book our flights but now that it’s a few days before we leave I wanted to share my 5 car renting tips for traveling to Halifax.

Like I said, I have never been to Halifax but my mom has. So she shared a couple of things with me before we started researching what car rental company we would use!

Here are 5 car renting tips for travelling to Halifax:
  1. If you are a Costco Member or Costco Capital One Member (you can be the later without the first), always use the Costco Travel to compare and get the best deals with your membership! I did research on my own before my mom recommended the Costco Travel site and we found a less expensive option for the same car and rental time!
  2. Another perk of the Costco Travel, an additional driver was free to add on! Where booking directly through the Halifax rental car company it was $10/day for an additional drive. Again more savings!
  3. If you have an early or evening flight that is close to their opening or closing times in Halifax, call ahead to confirm they will be open and available for your car rental. Better to be safe, than sorry!
  4. If you’re arrival or departure times are during the Halifax rental car off hours, schedule your rental car drop off at a closer location to your hotel and then use a taxi or Uber to drive to the airport for your flight. It’s an extra step but there are no 24 hour rental car companies at the Halifax airport.
  5. Check your credit card’s travel perks, often your credit card includes coverage for damage and collision incidents of the card holder’s rental car. But make sure to not sign up for the rental car’s damage and collision coverage or your credit will not cover it! This will save you money and, depending on your credit card, it will cover more than the rental car’s coverage.

I can’t wait to see what adventures we get up to on our trip to Halifax! And don’t worry, I will share all of it on my Instagram and Instastories while I’m there!

What are your experiences with renting cars? Good or bad?

The Chicco Pocket Snack Booster has 3 different heights – this works best when installed on top of a chair, especially for my busy toddler Abigail, because everyone’s chair and table height will differ from house to house and this makes it so she will always be able to secured and close to the top of the table.

The Chicco Pocket Snack Booster folds compact – the back of the high chair folds down, the legs collapse into the seat, and the tray can be taken off.

The Chicco Pocket Snack Booster is easy to use – the design is straight forward! There is one push down lever on the bottom of the seat that lets the legs move and click into place between the 3 heights. The 2 sets of straps secure the travel high chair to any dining chair with a backing, so there is no wiggle room for your little mover. And the tray, if you are using it, snaps on and off when you want it to.

This modern high chair is available in 3 different colours, the Chicco Pocket Snack Booster shown above in the photos is the beautiful lavender (my girls adore purple) but it also comes in: grey and stone
